The Friends of the Aurora Public Library will continue their 25thAnniversary celebration with a special display in honor of Earth Day.  All sorts of Earth Day related books will be highlighted from Alternative Energy to the Ozone; from Endangered Species to Coral Reefs; from Organic Gardening to Orangutans – all representative of the wide range of books available at The Book Outlet.  And all Science books (as well as Children’s, Shakespeare and all categories of History) are 50% off during the month of April.

In addition, The Book Outlet will debut their new eco-friendly book bags for purchase during this event.  It displays the Friends’ famous mascot, Paige Turner, a “friendly” green bookworm named by a young customer.  “Many of our customers prefer not to take their purchases in a plastic bag,” said Jackie Pritts, manager of The Book Outlet. “Now they have an option for a permanent book bag to use for their shopping at the Friends Book Outlet (and elsewhere),” Pritts said.

A store where customers can pay less than $1 for a book might seem like something out of a 1950s novel.

But at the Book Outlet at 2243 S. Peoria St., it’s an everyday reality.

“It’s more important to give people a bargain than to put (a book) on the shelf for $14,” said Kathy Forsman, volunteer and publicity chair for the Friends of the Aurora Public Library.

The nonprofit organization donates money raised from the Book Outlet to the financially beleaguered Aurora Public Library system and is celebrating their 25th anniversary this year, with the goal of attracting new clientele through innovative events.

The Friends of the Aurora Public Library will celebrate their 25^th year of serving readers in our community during 2012.  The primary mission of the Friends is to support the ongoing services and programs of the Aurora Public Library with financial donations.  The Friends accomplish this by operating the Book Outlet located at 2243 South Peoria Street in the Iliff Square Shopping Center.  During 2011, proceeds from the Book Outlet donated directly to the Aurora Public Library totaled $50,000.

“We are excited to mark this landmark occasion during 2012 with a number of special events for our members and customers.  Our constant focus will be on raising the level of awareness of our ‘gem’ of a bookstore and continuing to provide financial support for the Aurora Public Libraries” said David Origlio, President of the Friends of the Aurora Public Library Board of Trustees.

The Book Outlet is 100% staffed by a group of over 40 enthusiastic volunteers.  “We couldn’t survive without our dedicated and knowledgeable volunteers.  They are true experts in their specialty areas and love to share their passion for reading with our customers,” said Jackie Pritts, Manager of the Book Outlet.

These hardworking folks will be hosting CUSTOMER APPRECIATION DAYS at the Book Outlet on:

• Wednesday, January 25^th from 10 am to 6 pm
• Friday, January 27^th from 4:30 pm to 8 pm
• Saturday, January 28^th from 10 am to 4 pm

With over 1,000 square feet of books in over 80 categories, the Book Outlet has something for everyone.  The atmosphere is lively and well organized.  Fiction books are sorted by genre and alphabetized by author.  Non-fiction books are categorized with clear signage making it easy to locate the books you are seeking.  Our inventory turns over very quickly so there is always something new on the shelves.  Each book is individually priced from 30 cents (yes, you read that correctly) to $4.00.  We also have a specialty and gift book section.  We also carry CDs, DVDs, VHS tapes, records, puzzles and books on tape and CD.  Gift certificates are also available in $5 and $10 increments for the perfect gift for your favorite reader.

The Book Outlet also welcomes your donations of gently used books in all categories – both hardback and paperback, DVDs, VHS tapes, CDs, audio books, records and puzzles.  Many of our customers choose to re-donate their purchases once they have enjoyed them.

There are many benefits to becoming a Member of the Friends of the Aurora Public Library including 10% off every purchase every time, advance notification of monthly sales and special events, periodic Member Sales where all member purchases receive a 50% discount.  Annual membership fees are very economical starting at only $10 and are tax deductible.
